Music video styles

The main Styles of music video.
Music videos are used to help link lyrics to narratives. We also have music videos so that artist can promote themselves and their music.
Some artists use their music video to almost create another side to their song. to create an artistic or unusual way of interpreting their song.

Music videos are usually very short, on average from 3-5 mins. although there is obviously not a limit so you can come across some videos that are much loner even 7 mins long in some cases.

Performance based

This would include dancing on a stage or a dancing based video, maybe where the artist is performing or a band also can seem like a real life situation. with close ups shots and lots of fast paced shots. Also in these videos the artist can sometimes perform in some unusual places or and be lip syncing. This music video is a performance based video.
This video is a very very conventional performance based music video. As they are being filmed on stage as if they are playing live at one of their shows. and this video is fast and very lively with dancing and lip syncing.

Narrative based
These styles of music video often are telling a story. This is what narrative means story. They are often a story telling what the lyrics re trying to say, for example some cheesy songs, showing how a girl like another boy but he doesn't like her.
These videos can be like a mini film. With a beginning middle and end.
Due to videos being so short, the narrative videos have to be fast paced to be able to tell the whole story, This then results in very quick shots, lots of close ups and cuts to get the story going quickly. They use inter-textuality with films an tv and other videos. They also mimic genres just like films often they will follow a genre like horror comedy sci-fi etc. Sometimes the artist may play the main character, or sometimes the videos may use actors. A good example of a narrative music video is,

This example is a Justin Timberlake song, this is one of those videos that breaks the typical convention of music videos being 3-5 mins long this video is 9 mins long this is an extended version for the music video.

Concept
Thematic videos
There are lots of common themes in music videos and therefore it depends on the genre of music.
i.e Heavy metal will most likely go for a performance based music video where as a 'Rap' video may also go for performance but might be like them waling through the street ect.
This is a screen shot from a Drake Rap song 'Worst behaviour' This shows how this is a performance video but is him in the streets. This is just one example of a thematic video.

Symbolic
These type of music videos often include lots of symbols and have lots of meaning like based in a graveyard heavily suggesting death etc. They may also use lots of montages, lots of images together to create meaning and contradictory.
Also a grate use of lighting to suggest mood and what the video is trying to suggest. similar to the narrative they will be fast passed to get the story across in a short amount of time.
This video is Madonna 'Like a prayer' this video is a grate example of a symbolic video. You can see how it is a narrative music video but was separates it from being solely narrative is the meaning behind the video.

Interesting idea
These types of music video are stylish and artistic, the mise en scene dominates the whole video, they will often be telling  story but the mise en scene creates another story completely and your imagination will flow away from you completely. very fast paced agin and the experimental use of editing is what builds the music video. conspicuous lighting to create dramatic effect along with the use of cinematography. They will often break the rules of continuity editing. For example a video that represents this style is The red hot chilli peppers 'Outside' This video has a very interesting theme to it as you will be able to see. In this video you will see a very experimental use of camera shots editing and performance.
