Michael jackson “Bilie Jean”
This was a major success of a music video in 1982, and was one of the best selling singles in1983
topping both us and uk charts simultaneously.

But why?

Why was the video such a success.
This video starts off with a very dark atmosphere very mysterious, with dark shadows of a man and then you see parts of his gloves and face, along with the iconic bass line.

The man is smoking which iconicity at the time was seen to be a cool thing to do. with close up shots of him smoking then with a pan close up of him dropping the cigarette bud. Then as the next iconic part of the riff comes in, as you can see here, introduced by a flip of a coin. it was Michael jackson. The floor lighting up with each step. in 1982 this would have been very difficult and professional editing, so this would have been a major thing to the audiences watching. to think that he was so special the floor lights up his every step. Phenomenal.

This Music video was a huge move forward into the narratives of music videos, and a lot of Michael Jacksons music videos where all story and showed the narratives. The mood of the song is set by the lighting at the beginning it starts in black and white to create a mysterious atmosphere, the dark atmosphere then counter acts when the bright lights when Michael steps on the floor, this makes it seem way more exciting and more significant.
